자연미술큐브전 12x12x12+자연(Nature): 조화로운 감각의 향연장

인간을 둘러싼 환경 안에서 아름다움(미美)에 대한 추구는 인류의 역사와 더불어 수많은 예술가, 철학자들을 탄생시켰고 우리의 삶을 질적으로 풍요롭게 만들었다. 미술은 문명사와 시대정신에 많은 영향을 받으며 정신과 육체를 탐구하고 변화와 개혁으로 창조된 새로운 작품들을 통해 발전을 해 오고 있다. 자연미술은 인간이 주인공으로서 내용과 형식을 혁신적으로 새롭게 표현해 나가며 발전해 나가는 것이 아니라 자연이라는 장소성과 시시각각 변화하는 자연의 미적인 부분들을 정신과 육체, 영혼의 감각으로 발견하여 서로의 질서 안에서 조화롭게 현대미술의 다양한 방식으로 표현하는 예술이다.

한국에서는 자연과 인간간의 공존의 미학을 추구하며 충청남도 공주와 금강을 중심으로 1981년 한국자연미술가협회-야투(Yatoo, 野投)가 결성되어 작품과 전시, 연구를 지속적으로 해오고 있다. 야(野, 들, 자연) 투(投, 던지다)는 금강의 자연환경을 배경으로 2년마다 금강자연미술비엔날레를 개최하고, 12cm 정육면체의 일정한 규격 안에서 ‘자연’을 주제로 한 창의적인 작품들의 실내전시를 개최하며 세계적으로 자연미술의 공감대를 형성하고 있다.

2017년부터 시작한 ‘자연미술큐브전’은 이번에는 ‘12x12x12+자연(Nature)’이란 주제로 총 40개국에서 231명 작가들의 295 큐브작품들이 출품되었다. 전시는 전 세계에서 참여한 작가들의 독창적인 컨셉과 재료, 표현방법과 독특한 시각적 메시지를 통해 우리가 늘 숨 쉬면서 온 몸으로 누리고 있음에도 잊고 있었던 ‘자연’에 대한 의미를 상기시키고 ‘자연미술’이라는 특별한 주제를 통한 지역과 나누는 소통과 공감을 시도해 볼 수 있는 성찰의 장으로 기획되었다. 이렇게 ‘자연미술큐브전’은 자연미술운동의 하나로 전 세계의 자연미술가들의 각기 다른 자연에 대한 예술적 메시지를 서로 공유하는 자리가 되고 있다.

동양에서의 자연은 우주, 인간과 전체적으로 연관되어 있는 유기적인 순환관계에 있으며 서로는 조화롭게 상생한다고 여겨왔다. 서구에서는 유기체의 스스로 존재하는 본성으로 접근하며실체적으로 문명, 인공과 반대의 개념으로 자연(nature)을 다루어 왔다. 서양의 분석적 전개의 특징을 빼면 동양과 서양 모두 자연은 존재의 본질에 대해 말한다.

예술은 사회적, 자연적, 환경 안에서 예술가가 정신, 육체, 감정, 영혼을 담아 그 본질부터 형상을 구체적으로 혹은 추상적으로 표현하며 창조하는 것이다. 이는 예술가들이 개별적 정체성과 함께 논리, 감각, 보편, 특수, 현상, 본질, 구상, 추상 등을 탐구하며 존재를 포용하고 조화로운 표현의 작업을 하는 것과 자연이 닮아 있다.

야투의 자연미술은 자연을 장소삼아 그곳에서 발견한 재료나 최소한의 질료로 장소를 크게 해치지 않고 화합하면서 작업하는 것을 추구한다. 자연 안에서 찾아다니며 만나게 되는 공기, 물, 바람, 사계절, 빛, 소리를 담아 함께 펼쳐내는 작품은 미술관이나 갤러리 화이트큐브 전시장에서 보는 것과는 전혀 다른 감동을 준다. ‘자연미술큐브전’은 현장성이 강한 자연미술전시에 비해 작가참여나 주제표현 면에서 자유롭다. 큐브는 자연과 대비되는 한정된 공간, 전체존재 안에서 소우주, 생명체를 담는 기관, 우주 안에서의 지구, 조각적인 형상을 표현할 수 있는 3차원 공간 등 다양한 의미를 갖는다.

12x12x12cm의 정육면체는 작가의 작업을 담기에는 작고 제한된 공간이지만 또한 작가의 상상력과 개념을 담아 낼 수 있는 무한한 공간이기도 하다. 그리고 전 세계 작가의 작품을 우편으로 운송하여 전시 비용에 큰 부담이 없으며 전시장소의 선택이 용이하고 작품의 소재의 선택이나 표현방법도 자유롭다. 작품을 살펴보면 큐브 안에서 자연에서 수집한 재료(돌, 나뭇가지, 흙 등)나 예술적 재료를 사용해 층층이 쌓거나 다양한 방향으로 펼쳐 변조하고, 색과도 섞어 드로잉하고, 입체적으로 설치 표현한 작업이다. 큐브안의 작은 요소(점, 선, 면, 덩어리)는 그 안에서 지속적으로 분화하고 발화하며 창조물로서 다양한 감각들을 숨결처럼 내보내고 있다. 큐브 한 공간은 작가의 창조 세계를 대신하지만 295개 큐브로 연출된 전시는 현대 미술 안에서 자연미술을 다양한 감각으로 보여주는 조화로운 향연장이 된다.

COVID-19가 창궐한지 1년이 다 되어가지만 인류는 여전히 속수무책이다. 지구촌 곳곳에서는 환경오염과 기후변화로 지진, 산불, 야생의 급격한 멸종 등 이상 징후를 보여준다. 인류는 예술, 정치, 경제, 사회, 학문 등 모든 분야에서 이전과는 다른 많은 변화를 겪게 될 것이다. 전시도 공간을 직접 방문해서 실제로 작품을 보고 감상하고 체험하는 형태가 아니라 비대면의 온라인 전시, 가상전시, 소수예약제 등으로 전환되며 새로운 방법을 찾아 가고 있는 중이다. 이런 시대에 자연의 장소 안에서 이루어진 생태학적 전시인 ‘금강자연미술비엔날레’와 낭비 없이 최소한의 예술 공간을 실험하는 ‘자연미술큐브전 12x12x12+자연(Nature)’은 시대를 예견한 창발적 전시일 것이다. 이번 충북 예봄 갤러리를 찾아가는 전시를 통해 공존의 미학을 실천하는 자연미술을 이해하며 다양한 감각들의 작품을 통해 창의력과 자연친화적 정서를 회복하고 자연과 삶을 돌아보게 되는 기회가 되기를 희망한다.

Nature Art Cube Exhibition 12x12x12+Nature:

The Site Where We can Enjoy Harmonious Senses

Pursuit of beauty in the environment we live in has generated numerous artists and philosophers in human history, and enriched quality of our lives. Fine art has been influenced by the history of civilization and the spirit of age, and has developed through new artworks in the process of exploring mind and body, and pursuing changes and reforms. Nature art does not develop while humans, as protagonists, try to innovate contents and forms, but develops while humans discover the location called nature and constantly change beauty of nature with the sense of mind, body, and spirit, and express it in various methods of modern art.

Koreans have pursued esthetics of coexistence of nature and humans. Around Gongju city and Geum River, Chungcheongnamdo Province, the Korean Nature Artists' Association - YATOO was formed in 1981, and the members have kept producing their artworks, exhibiting them, and doing researches. Literally, YA(野) means 'nature or field', and TOO(投) means 'to cast something'. Thus, roughly, Yatoo means 'to cast body and mind to nature'. Every two years, Yatoo members have held Geumgang Nature Art Biennale, and recently added the indoor exhibition displaying works with 'nature' as its common theme and created within the standard size of 12cm cube. The biennale and the cube exhibition have contributed to creation of some consensus on what nature art is.

In 2017, the biennale started Nature Art Cube Exhibition, and, this year, it set its theme as ‘12x12x12+자연(Nature),' which means that artworks are created within the standard cube(12x12x12cm) with the common theme of nature. This year, 231 artists from 40 countries presented 295 cube works. The exhibition was planned to be a sphere of reflection where artists from the world express nature with creative concepts and materials, and with unique visual messages, and where people can try communication and consensus through specific theme called 'nature art'. In such a way, 'Nature Art Cube Exhibition' has become a place where nature artists from the world can share their unique artistic messages on nature.

In the East, nature has been viewed as being in organic cyclical relationship with universe and humans, and existing harmoniously with them. In the West, people have approached nature as self-existing one, and treated it as the opposite concept to civilization and artificiality. If we exclude the characteristics of analytical procedure of the West, peoples in both the East and the West see nature as essentials of being.

Art is what artists create works concretely or abstractly using their minds, bodies and spirits in social and natural environment. What artists pursue logic, sense, generality, specificity, phenomenon, essence, concreteness, and abstraction, etc. as well as individual identities, and embrace existence, and do the harmonious works of expression resembles nature.

Nature art of Yatoo pursues artistic works done in natural site, and using the minimal amount of materials found at the site without damaging the natural site. Air, water, wind, seasons, light, and sound visitors meet while walking to watch artistic works give them quite different feeling from what they feel at museums or gallery white cube exhibitions. Nature Art Cube Exhibition is freer in participant artists and expression of subjects compared with nature artworks which are displayed in nature. Cube has various meanings such as limited space contrasting to nature, micro universe in whole being, structure containing life, earth in the universe, and 3-dimensional space where sculpture can be expressed.

While the cube with the size of 12x12x12cm is a limited space to contain the work of an artist, it is also an unlimited space to contain imagination and concept of the artist. It is possible to send works by mail to anyplace in the world, and it is not expensive to exhibit them. It is also easy to select the place to exhibit them. Artists can freely select the subjects and express them. Artists create their works by using materials found in nature such as stone, tree branch, and soil, and expressing 3-dimensionally by piling them or using other methods, and doing drawing by coloring them. Small elements with the cube (dot, line, plane, and lump) exhale various senses as creations while continuing to differentiate, and erupt as if they are breathing. While the space within the cube represents the creative world of an artist, exhibition composed of 295 cubes becomes a party place where we can enjoy nature art in various senses within modern art.

While it has been almost one year since COVID-19 first appeared on the earth, we are still at a loss what to do. Here and there across the world, abnormal phenomena such as earthquake, wild fire, and abrupt extinction of wild animal or plant caused by environmental pollution and climate change happen. Human beings will experience many unprecedented changes in art, politics, economics, society, and researches. COVID-19 changes exhibition culture from visiting the places, watching or experiencing works to non-tact online exhibition, virtual exhibition, and small number reservation, and it is searching for other ways. In this situation, the ecological exhibition Geumgang Nature Art Biennale which is held in nature, and Nature Art Cube Exhibition 12x12x12+Nature which is experimenting minimal art space are creative experiments of new exhibition culture. Now, I hope that the visiting exhibition held at Yebom Gallery, Chungbuk Province, will be an opportunity where people can understand nature art pursuing esthetics of co-existence, recover nature-friendly emotion while watching nature artworks, and think again nature and life.
